Reception

The Reception curriculum continues and builds upon the fun learning experiences from Nursery.

From your child’s first day with us, we plan to ignite their natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning through carefully planned opportunities for purposeful play and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activity. Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, think about problems and relate to others. Children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play which is guided by adults. All reception (and nursery) students have access to indoor-outdoor free flow learning so they are encouraged to make choices for themselves and to direct their own learning. With this as a strong focus we ensure that children are happy, secure and eager to come to school. Children in Reception have access to a wide range of activities which promote all areas of the Foundation Stage curriculum (from literacy and numeracy areas, to physical and creative activities such as building dens outside).

Forest School

As part of the superb facilities at Bridgwater College Academy we have three Forest School learning environments. All Foundation Stage (children in Nursery and Reception) and Key Stage One children have access to Forest School. Each Reception and Key Stage one child will attend Forest School once a fortnight with our highly trained member of staff alongside their teacher or teaching assistant, and every nursery child will access Forest School based activities on a daily basis.
